Newsletter | Raising awareness for organ donation with SB 5524

Every day, the need for organ donation becomes more urgent. More than 100,000 people in the United States are currently on the transplant waiting list, including nearly 2,000 of our Northwest neighbors. Tragically, 17 people die every day while waiting for a transplant.

During this legislative session, I’ve partnered with LifeCenter Northwest to champion legislation raising awareness about the life-saving gift of organ, eye, and tissue donation. I’m proud to have introduced Senate Bill 5524, which would create a specialty license plate dedicated to organ donation awareness in Washington.

LifeCenter Northwest, the region’s organ procurement organization, plays a vital role in stewarding the gift of organ and tissue donation while managing the state’s organ donor registry. Proceeds from selling these specialty plates would directly support their efforts to educate the public and conduct outreach across Washington communities. Through these initiatives, we can help people understand the profound impact and life-saving potential of organ, eye, and tissue donation.

For the Department of Licensing (DOL) to consider the Donate Life Washington plate series, we need at least 3,500 individuals to express their intent to purchase the plate. If you want to support this cause, please sign the form indicating your intent to buy the plate if it becomes available. Proceeds from plate sales will help fund critical public education and outreach efforts about organ donation throughout our state.

Raising awareness about organ donation is a crucial step in saving lives. Senate Bill 5524 will not only bring much-needed attention to this issue but also has the potential to change and save thousands of lives.

Together, we can make a difference. Please consider joining this vital effort to promote organ donation awareness and help those needing life-saving transplants.
