OLYMPIA… Sen. Keith Goehner’s bill to help counties with land-use planning is a step closer to a vote by the full House of Representatives.
After receiving unanimous support this past week from the House Local Government Committee, Senate Bill 5558 is now before the committee that places legislation on the voting calendar.
Goehner’s proposal would give 10 counties, including Chelan and Douglas counties, an additional six months to review and revise their comprehensive plans.
“This bill would allow more time for thoughtful planning, avoids overburdening local governments, and ensures compliance with new state laws,” Goehner said. “Recent legislative changes related to housing, zoning, and climate policies require integration into comprehensive plans, and the extra time would help cities and counties incorporate these changes effectively.”
By adjusting the timeline for design review and accessory dwelling units, Goehner said the process streamlines implementation and encourages housing development.
“It’s a practical adjustment to Washington’s growth-planning process and ensures communities have the time and resources needed to develop well-rounded policies. It balances the need for timely updates with the reality that comprehensive planning is complex and requires significant stakeholder input.”
Goehner expects the bill will come up for a vote on the House floor ahead of the April 16 voting deadline. SB 5558 was passed unanimously by the Senate on March 5.
