OLYMPIA… Kat Hansch, a freshman at Cashmere High School, recently spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia.
She was one of 15 students who served as Senate pages for the 12th week of the 2025 legislative session.
Hansch was sponsored by Sen. Keith Goehner who represents the 12th Legislative District, serving Chelan and parts of King and Snohomish counties.
“Kat was a fantastic page with a bright personality,” said Goehner. “I am glad she enjoyed paging and got to learn lots about the Legislature with other students from across the state.”
Hansch, the 14-year-old daughter of Suzy and Chris Hansch of Wenatchee plays volleyball and softball at her school. She also competes in parliamentary procedure though FFA and sees her paging experience as being helpful in the future because “the average person is not educated on state-level politics and this has helped me gain a better understanding.”
“Working with the security officers and helping them was so fun,” Hansch said. “I also liked getting to page on the Senate floor and seeing in person how bills get passed.”
The Senate Page Program provides an opportunity for Washington students to spend a week working at the Legislature. Students transport documents between offices, as well as deliver messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a legislative mock session.
Students interested in the Senate Page Program are encouraged to visit the Senate Page Program webpage.
Applications for the 2026 legislative session open November 1, 2025.
