OLYMPIA… Legislation sponsored by Sen. Keith Goehner to support counties in updating their land-use policies has received final approval from the Legislature and is now headed to the governor for consideration.
Senate Bill 5558 would grant 10 counties—including Chelan and Douglas—an extra six months to review and update their comprehensive growth management plans, allowing for more deliberate, community-informed planning.
Goehner, R-Dryden, issued this statement following the House vote:
“Senate Bill 5558 is a smart, strategic adjustment to Washington’s growth-management timeline—giving cities and counties the time they need to plan responsibly, engage with their communities, and align land-use policies with emerging state housing and climate laws.”
“By extending key deadlines and syncing implementation timelines, SB 5558 would reduce the pressure on local governments, ensuring thoughtful planning isn’t sacrificed for speed. It’s a win for good governance.”
“This bill would allow local jurisdictions to take a more thoughtful, integrated approach to growth, support housing solutions like ADUs and middle housing, protect infrastructure capacity, and ensure development aligns with residents’ needs.”
