On Friday, Gov. Jay Inslee signed legislation introduced by Rep. Keith Goehner that will extend a property tax exemption to those who qualify and have a detached accessory dwelling unit (ADU).

House Bill 2375 will add the tax exemption for qualified seniors and disabled persons living in detached ADUs.

“Washington state has an affordable housing issue. This new law increases housing options for those who may be struggling to find affordable housing. It is important to note it does not affect property taxes,” said Goehner, R-Dryden. “This also makes the exemption policy more uniform. Attached ADUs already receive a property tax exemption.”

The issue was brought to Goehner by a constituent who is on a fixed income and is providing housing to a relative who is also on a limited income.

“Many of the best ideas for legislation come from our constituency. I am pleased the Legislature took action and is giving those who may be struggling with finances or housing costs some additional options,” said Goehner. If we have the opportunity to provide more affordable housing for low-income individuals we need to take action given our state’s housing crisis.”

 The bill goes into effect on June 6, 90 days from when the Legislature adjourned.
